Particularly funny is Eddie Jemison ("Ocean’s 11") as Dawn’s wacky and sweet suitor Ogie. The director/writer is generous to her actors and most everybody has a chance to shine at least once. The ensemble cast, including Shelly as fellow waitress Dawn, is wonderful. Pomatter, on the other hand, experiences erotic pleasure whenever he eats the creations she makes.Īlthough there is a serious side, "Waitress" is primarily a comedy and is at its best during the funny moments. Earl knows Jenna is a fantastic baker, yet gives her begrudging praise and beats her when she tries to enter a pie-baking contest. They play an integral part, differentiating the men in Jenna’s life. In the case of "Waitress," it’s the luscious pies.īut the baked goods are not just eye candy. The fringe benefit for watching these types of films is getting to ogle the foodstuffs. "Soul Food," "Chocolat," and "Babette’s Feast" are some good examples. "Waitress" belongs in a sub-genre that isn’t seen too often - life’s lessons told through food - where the main character learns something about life either by eating marvelous creations or making them. Jenna’s life takes an unexpected turn when she enters into a torrid affair with her gynecologist, Dr. ![]() When Jenna gets pregnant, her desire to leave Earl is heightened, but, unfortunately, she lacks the means and inner strength to do so. ![]() She is married to Earl (Jeremy Sisto), a brutish, selfish, manipulative dolt. When she’s not dealing with irate customers like Old Joe (Andy Griffith), she bakes pies, often giving them quirky names. Russell’s Jenna is a waitress in a diner down South. With a crackerjack ensemble supporting an excellent Keri Russell, "Waitress" plays like an off-Broadway production adapted for the screen - it is that well-written and -acted. The movie is as sunny and optimistic as Shelly’s death was needless. ![]()
